Add new art
A simple way to give a room a fresh, new look is to add art. Whether it’s small pieces leading guests down a hallway or a large piece acting as a focal point of the room, artworks are a great way to add interest and color to any wall. Localize the look by scavenging pieces at art festivals and galleries such as the Riverside Arts Market or the Southlight Gallery Downtown. Pictured above is a large piece by Shaun Thurston, a local artist known for his murals overtaking walls of buildings around Jax. It’s hung in the apartment of Chef Jon Insetta, whose food you’ve probably indulged in if you ever dined at Avondale’s famed Orsay.

Mix it up with color and pattern
When adding patterns or pops of color to a house it’s important to maintain balance. A good rule of thumb is to keep color schemes relatively simple with patterns that contain the same color or the complementary colors. For example, if you have a blue couch, adding accents of orange throw pillows, chairs or an orange patterned rug can really make a room pop. Alison and Chris Sieburg, with the help of Shawn Starr Custom Homes, created the perfect mix of color and pattern for their modern farmhouse, as seen above.

Or go clean and simple
If adding less color and creating a more smoothing and calm presence is the goal, take a lesson from these homeowners and interior designer Stephanie Jarvis. When wanting to attain a simplistic, modern look, think about using organic accents such as exposed wood or live plants. Clean lines, soft colors, and natural light are are key.
In order to redecorate, one doesn’t need to start with a blank slate, just an open-mind.
