We have two major distinctions: First, our compensation is a flat retainer based on the complexity of your life, not on assets managed. As a fee only firm, we do not sell products, take referral fees, or receive compensation from any other sources. Our fees are comparable to what others charge for asset management alone, yet you receive the unparalleled value of our planning process.
Second, as financial life planners, our services go beyond typical financial planning and investment management. As a physician turned planner, Dr. McClanahan can help you navigate life events such as major illness, elder issues, and career changes. We help you plan for the present and future, while assisting you with life’s emergencies along the way.
Who is your ideal client?
Our clients are successful people who strive for balance in life and quality time with their loved ones. By delegating the “heavy lifting” of their financial life, they can pursue other interests with peace of mind.
What is your investment philosophy?
Successful investment management depends on three major factors: risk management, low costs and tax efficiency. We help you determine the minimum risk necessary to reach your goals, and utilize diversified low cost investments managed from a tax efficient perspective to fit your plan. Workplace retirement plans are included in reviews, while other assets are placed with an independent custodian for safeguarding.
Do you offer financial planning?
Financial planning provides the core of good investment management. We understand your goals, values and resources before putting an investment plan in place. Ongoing, we keep abreast of changes in your life that may affect your plan. We coordinate with your accountant and attorney to ensure everyone is working accurately and in harmony for you.

Carolyn McClanahan, MD, CFP® • Financial Planner
Carolyn McClanahan began her career as a financial planner in 2001. As a physician, she looked for a professional to help answer questions such as “How much do I need to save?” Finding that most people who called themselves “planners” were more interested in sales than advice, she chose to study financial planning herself, completing the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® curriculum at the University of North Florida. Carolyn soon recognized the glaring need for integrated fee only financial planning and investment management delivered by fiduciaries acting in the client’s best interest. Dr. McClanahan made a career change into financial planning to fill that need, and in 2004, started Life Planning Partners, Inc. to provide the type of fee only advice she once sought for herself.
Dr. McClanahan serves on the board of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors and volunteers at the I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless medical clinic. She speaks nationally on the interplay between health and financial issues. In 2009, she was named a “Mover & Shaker” in the financial planning profession by Financial Planning Magazine.
