Student artists are 12- to 17-year-old boys who are jailed while awaiting trial. Due to the severity of their charges, they are being prosecuted as adults, and some have been awaiting trial for more than two years. Through immersion in the visual arts, the Cathedral Arts Project provides a creative outlet for these students that builds their artistic skills and working knowledge of art and art history. In addition to teaching painting techniques, the program emphasizes improvement of communication and social skills, nonviolent self-expression and new avenues for coping in difficult environments. Neal Slavin (American, b. 1941) is a celebrated photographer, well known for his keen portraits of various groups of people in the United States and abroad. This installation comes from a portfolio of 15 photographs from 1979; the portfolio is a significant gift to Telfair’s contemporary photography collec¬tion and will be on view in its entirety for the first time.

Kahlil Gibran and the Feminine Divine

Renowned for his literary masterpiece The Prophet (1923), Lebanese-American artist and writer Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931) began experimenting with the visual arts at a young age. Telfair Museums proudly boasts the largest public collection of visual art by Kahlil Gibran in the United States, donated in 1950 by his lifelong supporter and mentor, Southern native Mary Haskell Minis. This exhibition concentrates on works that capture Gibran’s enduring belief in the oneness of all things, often character¬ized in his paintings and drawings as the feminine divine.

Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) is having a screening of the film “Conspiracy” in honor of Yom HaShoah—Holocaust Remembrance Day. The film examines the conference in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee, Germany on January 20, 1942. The film will be preceded by a brief presentation by Dr. Dirk Wendtorf, professor of German language and humanities at FSCJ South Campus.
