Nelly and Bow Wow to hit the court at UNF

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

Either I'm not as hip as I like to think I am or someone needs to hire a better publicist, but I just found out that Nelly and Bow Wow are playing in a celebrity basketball game at the UNF Arena on March 13.

Probably both.

We'll give you a hint. She once appeared on the cover of Jacksonville Magazine.

Guy Fieri fever

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

If I had a dollar for every Guy Fieri sighting I've heard about in the last week, I'd have at least 15 bucks. The winner of season two of The Next Food Network Star and host of three Food Network series was in town shooting for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and stopped by a number of local restaurants including Singleton's Seafood Shack, The Metro Diner, Culhane's Irish Pub, Sun Dog and 13 Gypsies.

I heard Fieri was "super nice" and "really funny."

And his hair looks just as ridiculous in person as it does on TV. (Okay, I didn't hear that. I'm just speculating.)

15-foot rattlesnake caught near outlet mall

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

I got an e-mail from another Jacksonville Magazine employee about a giant snake caught in Tuscany Village, a new housing development near the St. Augustine Premium Outlets. According to the e-mail, the 15-foot-long Eastern diamondback rattlesnake is the "largest ever caught on record." I'm not sure whose record we're talking about—KB Homes, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, the city of St. Augustine or the world—but it's definitely a sighting worth reporting. Even though I think the real star is the guy who had to wrangle the snake.

Tiger nowhere in sight, but Michael Jordan seen around town

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

Everyone on planet Earth knows that Tiger Woods was in Ponte Vedra Beach yesterday. But interestingly enough, no one saw hide or hair of him other than the handful of folks who were in the room when he made his apology statement.

People did, however, see Michael Jordan in town that same day. Jordan was reported to have been in town to support his pal (though he was not in the room at the time of the statement). I heard two independent sightings of the NBA Hall of Famer, one at The Fresh Market in Ponte Vedra Beach.

I called the store to verify the sighting but got a very curt "no"—almost before I could finish getting the sentence out. Definitely fishy.

State representative makes a haber-dash for it

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

State Representative Terry Fields was spotted dining at The Brick this afternoon. I didn't see who he was with or what he was eating, but I did notice him wearing a jaunty newsboy cap as he slipped out of Avondale restaurant. I guess he's got to keep his head warm somehow.

Harry Connick Jr. knows how to please a crowd

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

John Mayer left a lasting impression on some locals folks when he performed in town recently. And word has it, so did Harry Connick Jr., though, in a much more positive manner.

After playing to a sold-out crowd on Valentine's Day (one, two, three ... awwwww), HCJ set up a table outside his tour bus where he sat and signed autographs for every fan who waited. I heard he was funny and charming—everything John Mayer thinks he is.

You'd better read it fast, though, since Valentine's Day is tomorrow...

Ride 'em, urban cowboy!

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

Does will.i.am have what it takes to be urban cowboy? Judge for yourself by checking out this video of him riding a mechanical bull at Maverick's at the Black Eyed Peas after-concert party.

Thanks to Katie K. for sharing her video.

John Mayer was a jerk in Jacksonville too

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

By now, you've probably heard about John Mayer's controversial interview in Playboy in which he uses a racial slur, drops incessant F-bombs and talks about sex ad nauseum (a friendly reminder: it's Playboy, not US Weekly) and his subsequent self-indulgent, seven-minute-long apology at a concert in Nashville last night.

Well, guess what? It turns out he was just as much of a jerk when he was in Jacksonville last week. According to a reliable source, she heard "countless stories" of Mayer acting like "a princess," including an incident when he threw a fit because there weren't enough candles as required for his pre-show routine.

Pardon the pun, but Mayer needs to lighten up.

Black Eyed Peas are full of bull

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

I heard Maverick's was hosting a Black Eyed Peas after-concert party but figured it was just for people who went to the concert. It never crossed my mind that members of the band would actually show up. And if it had crossed my mind that any of them would show up, I would have bet money that it would have been one of those two guys who isn't will.i.am or Fergie, and he probably would have walked directly to the VIP area where no one could even see him and left five minutes later.

Obviously, I don't know the Peas very well because "the other two guys" (aka apl.de.ap and Taboo) and will.i.am showed up at the bar (with two body guards each, I hear), and not only did they mix and mingle with the crowd on the main floor but they rode the mechanical bull.

Tebow and Jones-Drew are built for speed

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing, Tim Tebow

Just so you know, I don't intentionally seek out Tim Tebow stories. The kid is just everywhere these days, what can I tell you?

Now, it seems, the Heisman Trophy winner and former Florida Gators quarterback will serve as grand marshal of day one of the Gatorade Duels, a 150-mile qualify race for the Daytona 500. Another local footballer—Maurice Jones-Drew will act as grand marshal for day two.

And not that this has anything to do with Tebow, Jones-Drew or NASCAR, but happy belated Wear a Wig Day!

Fergie's bus!

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

I heard that the Black Eyed Peas were going to be arriving by bus from Miami last night around 10 p.m., so I did what any normal person who reads TMZ.com religiously and has no life would do: I called a friend and we went to the Hyatt Regency to stalk them. After waiting around for about an hour and a half, we gave up (some of us have to work, you know).

At least we got to see where the rest of their buses would have parked, if they'd have bothered to show up on time.

UPDATE: I just found out they showed up an hour and 45 minutes late. The nerve.

Tebow's Super Bowl commercial ... just weird

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing, Tim Tebow

Did you happen to see Tim Tebow's much talked about TV commercial that aired during the Super Bowl? Turns out it wasn't controversial at all. Unless you consider full-body tackling your mother controversial.

John Mayer and Black Eyed Peas aren't shacking up together

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

We're not saying where we heard it, but we have it on good authority that John Mayer may be staying in town the night after his concert on Saturday, February 6 and laying his head at the Omni Jacksonville Hotel downtown. The singer has a day off between his Jacksonville and Charleston shows and has been known to stay at the Omni when he's in town.

And in other celebrity hotel news, the word is the Black Eyed Peas will be shacking up at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront Hotel prior to their concert on February 9. The Peas have two days off between their Super Bowl weekend concert and Jacksonville Show, so don't be surprised if you see them hanging at Hooters at the Landing Monday night. No, actually, you should be surprised if you see them there.

By the way, don't forget to celebrate Library Lovers' Month in February. Just make sure you don't go in the wrong door at the Main Library. Trust me.

Happy Birthday, Rosa Parks!

Happy Birthday, Dr. Henry Heimlich!

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

It would have been great if I'd run into Dr. Henry Heimlich today so I could wish him a happy 90th birthday in person (not to mention making a great celebrity sighting). But, alas, the good doctor whose patented maneuver has saved 50,000 people from choking to death probably wasn't anywhere near Jacksonville.

Instead, I celebrated his birthday by learning the Heimlich Maneuver and the self-Heimlich Maneuver, which you can read about on The Specktator, and l would encourage you to do the same.

NFL Hall of Famer likes breasts and thighs

Posted by Kerry Speckman Email   Category: Stargazing

An observant Eye-Team member spotted NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino buying two bottles of red wine and "a ton of rotisserie chicken" at The Fresh Market in Ponte Vedra Beach the other day. I have since learned that Marino's son Joey is on the golf team at the University of North Florida and was playing in the John Hyatt College Championship at Sawgrass Country Club. I hear the elder Marino has a tradition of feeding the boys before a big match.

I hope chicken and wine are are on his Nutrisystem plan.
