Martin Luther King Day of Service

Celebrating Martin Luther King Day as a "day on" instead of a day off, United Way of Northeast Florida joined forces with Wells Fargo, LISC and HandsOn Jacksonville to complete more than 20 volunteer projects in First Coast area communities. More than 500 volunteers visited, painted, planted, mulched and cleaned in Springfield, New Town, East Jacksonville and Northwest Jacksonville; a community garden and playground were built, the home of a 98-year-old resident got some upgrades, bookshelves were assembled, murals were painted... the list goes on.

I had the pleasure of meeting some of the volunteers taking on some maintenance work at The Sanctuary on 8th Street, a children's community center which offers after-school and summer camp programs. These volunteers spruced up the Sanctuary's playground, re-painted some well-used furniture and more.
