Three things to do this weekend that don't involve golf

I'll admit it: Even though I'm not a big golf fan, I'm going to THE PLAYERS. I'm actually pretty excited about it. But I know that while everyone is talking golf, golf, and more golf this weekend, many people are just not that interested. So, if you're in that group, while everyone else is sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic on A1A this weekend, you can check out these cool events instead.

Shen Yun - May 9-11

I haven't seen this show before, but I've heard a lot about it. Shen Yun features ethnic dances and traditional Chinese instruments accompanied by a live Western orchestra. It's colorful, vibrant, and a far cry from Dancing With The Stars. There's several showtimes this weekend at the Times-Union Center.

Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival - All month long

The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival's Springfest is in its 13th season and features tons of shows all month long—and there's more than just chamber music. This weekend, several shows are playing around the island, but my money's on the Free Concert in Amelia Park with Beth Newdome Fellowship Artists and Canary in the Coal Mine on Saturday, May 10. Canary in the Coal Mine is a female-fronted local indie-folk band that's definitely worth the drive to see for free. More info about the whole series can be found at

Moonlight Movies - May 9

This week, the Seawalk Pavilion plays The Incredibles in a Jax Beach tradition known as Moonlight Movies. It's free, and there's popcorn. It's kind of a no-brainer. Bring the kids and a blanket. Moonlight Movies is also going on all month—if you can't catch The Incredibles, on May 16 they're playing The Sandlot and on May 23 it's Spider-Man 2.
