Outside The Den

We’re Alex and Heather, and travel fills our souls. We love exploring the country (and hopefully soon the world!) and we use our blog, Outside The Den, to inspire others to do the same. We believe that through culinary adventures, cultural explorations, community happenings, and natural wonders you can break up your routine and expand your horizons. Alex is a Florida native who grew up with fresh citrus and love bugs. He imagines himself a terrible Southerner, but a halfway decent Floridian. He has always believed that no matter how a day goes, it begins and ends with beauty. Originally from Texas, Heather has lived throughout the East Coast and is happy to now call Jacksonville home. She is a firm believer in Thoreau’s advice of “Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.” As a blogging couple, Alex handles the majority of the writing, and Heather captures the moment with photography. We both graduated with degrees in History from the University of North Florida, and believe strongly in the importance of understanding where we've come from before deciding where to go next. Together we love exploring all of the amazing and incredible things life can offer, and then finding ways to share these wonderful experiences to bring our community closer together outside of our normally busy insulated lives.

When Jacksonville Magazine asked if we’d like to be one of the bloggers for their newly designed website, we couldn’t have been more excited. As a publication that has been around for 30 years, Jacksonville Magazine is a staple in this community. We love their vision for the future of the magazine and website and are looking forward to being a part of it.

We recently got back from our honeymoon in Asheville, where we did our best to see and taste everything we could get out hands on. Asheville is very much a walking town, so we also got to experience some of their amazing street art and other public installations. We read poetry across the walls of Chicken Alley after walking beneath an overpass where every pillar and wall was coated in beautiful murals. Asheville also has one of the most creative culinary scenes we’ve yet experienced, and if Duck Vindaloo Gravy sounds like something you might enjoy, then you should stick with us!

You’ll get to hear from us twice a month with travel related posts that are within the Southeast region. We’ll be sharing things like food festivals, secret hideaways off of the highway, and fun activities for the whole family. You can trust us to dig up the most decadent dishes, to show you the most splendid sights, and to inspire you to do the same. You never know what you might find when you walk out your front door!
